The Badminton World Federation (BWF) was established on 5 July 1934 in the historic city of Guildford, England. At that time, only 9 countries participated and formed the International Lawn Tennis Federation (ILTF) as the governing body.
In 1981, the organization’s name was changed to Badminton World Federation (BWF). By 1984, BWF became a completely independent organization.
Since 1977, BWF has organized the first Badminton World Championship in Malmö, Sweden. After that, this tournament was held every 2 years and became the biggest sporting event in the world of badminton.
